CONOR MCGREGOR TWEETS THAT HE HAS RETIRED FROM MMA
When most folks were sleeping, former UFC featherweight and lightweight winner Conor McGregor put out a tweet saying that he’s retired from MMA. Below is the quotation from his tweet:
«Hey guys quick announcement, I have decided to retire from the sport formally known as»Mixed Martial Art» today. I wish all my colleagues well going forward in contest. I join my partners with this particular venture, currently. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!»
At first glance, it is difficult to take McGregor seriously. In the end, this is not the first time. Another time he tweeted something similar after he had been submitted by Nate Diaz at a shocker in UFC 196. Only a couple of months after tweeting that, he had been back at the cage, winning a majority decision over Diaz in UFC 202. So whenever McGregor tweets something about retiring from MMA, you need to keep in mind he’s pulled this stunt before.
At second glance, however, there might be something more to this. In the end, McGregor does not desire MMA. It’s only a matter of whether or not he has that burning passion to step into the cage, because as far as finances go, he’s set for life. The Floyd Mayweather boxing superfight in 2017 made McGregor upwards of $100 million, and that financial windfall help set him up for success with Suitable 12 whiskey. McGregor does not really truly»need» MMA anymore. However he is a competitor, and he likely does not wish to go out on a devastating entry loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in UFC 229 in his final bout, and of course all of the shenanigans that went along with it.
If anything, this could be a tactic by McGregor. It is smart for McGregor to get the eye of MMA fans and press. He hasn’t even fought in nearly a year and yet remains talked about more than any other fighter. He is clearly a very wise man. The UFC has had talks with McGregor about coming at UFC 239 at a co-main event fight against Nate Diaz, but McGregor was adamant he would like to fight in the main event, and it appears that’s in the crux of his own beef with UFC president Dana White and co.. This could all be McGregor posturing and trying to acquire the UFC to call his bluff, but it remains to be seen.
Without McGregor, the UFC will have to proceed and reserve UFC 239 without him as a possible fight. The rumors are that the UFC wants to do Daniel Cormier from Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in the main event, and there are lots of other options for the card including Kamaru Usman vs. Colby Covington for the UFC welterweight title. As much as the fans need to see McGregor come back and fight someone like Diaz, and as far as it appears like the promotion needs McGregor, they really don’t, along with the UFC’s well-oiled machine will continue to move forwards with or without the Irish superstar.
