Dayton Flyers men’s basketball
The Dayton Flyers men’s basketball team is a midsize major college basketball program that competes in NCAA Division I and the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10) representing the University of Dayton in Ohio. The Flyers play their home games.
A 2015 analysis of college basketball staff valuations put Dayton No. 23 in the country with 2014 adjusted revenues in excess of $16.6 million (highest for non-football conference programs) and a valuation of almost $84 million (second highest for non-football conference programs and higher than programs like Florida, Texas, and Michigan).
Shortly the school hired Dayton alum Anthony Grant and Oklahoma City Thunder assistant trainer as head coach. Grant previously served at Alabama and VCU. His first time at Dayton saw the Flyers complete the first time since the 05-06 season the team finished with a losing record.
His Second year featured breakout freshman Obi Toppin, who led the team in the A10 to a third place finish. They lost their first game of the conference championship, and missed the NCAA championship. They earned a five seed from the NIT, but dropped at Colorado in the first round.
Dayton has historical rivalries with several area teams such as Xavier, Wright State, and Miami (Ohio), in addition to fellow Catholic schools such as Marquette, DePaul, and Notre Dame. Dayton has fulfilled Xavier 158 occasions, more than any other opponent, and retains an 84–75 edge in the show through 2019. Dayton and Xavier play for the Blackburn/McCafferty Trophy.
With the departure of Xavier into the Big East at 2013, Dayton hunted. Each year Dayton plays Atlantic 10 rival St. Louis University for its rights to the Arch Baron Cup Arch Baron Cup.
